Beware of scammers who want money | Journal-news

It’s hard to keep track of the number of ways we need to be vigilant these days, as it seems criminals are getting more creative and ruthless with every minute. For many of us, it is necessary to be vigilant not only for our own benefit, but for the sake of our older and/or vulnerable loved ones who need a little coaching.

A recent case provides an example we can all learn from, as a woman from Las Vegas, Nevada, was sentenced in West Virginia to more than seven years in prison and ordered to pay $336,000 for money laundering and mail fraud and electronics. Shelly Leipham had defrauded elderly residents over the phone. For an elderly Harrison County woman, Leipham called and claimed the woman won $1 million, then ordered her to send $25,000 over two years by mail and wire, prosecutors say.

“Leipham harassed and manipulated her elderly victims by calling them over and over again, ignored the hardships they were experiencing while she exploited them, repeatedly lied to them, and accepted no responsibility for her conduct,” he said. said U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld.

Many of us may think we are too savvy and sophisticated to fall for such a scam, but believing we are protected is a mistake. These criminals use any tactics necessary to extract as much money as possible from each individual. There is no single defense.

Still, the best protection is to be skeptical, cautious, and ask lots of questions. Do not give in to fear if the tactic uses urgency and threats. Do not act hastily for fear of the consequences. Instead, slow down and wait for answers to your questions. Don’t let scammers play on your sense of empathy or charity, either. If you think you’re being asked to donate to a made-up cause, don’t feel guilty about asking.

And don’t give in to requests for money (especially cash, gift card, or wire transfer) or information without knowing EXACTLY who you’re dealing with.

And again, if you are confident in your own abilities to avoid such scams, make sure your friends and family are also well armed with that same confidence.
