Arsenal are expected to let a number of fringe players go this month as Mikel Arteta look to downsize his squad.

The departures could also raise significant funds for Arteta, whether it’s to do business during the January transfer window or just to bring in cash after the big spend last summer.

The Gunners have also recalled a young striker from a loan spell at the start of their own glaring problems, most notably with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is now heading to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Moreover, Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final clash with Liverpool on Thursday night has been called into question following an explosive announcement.

The shock of Liverpool in doubt

Liverpool have been hit by another coronavirus outbreak, which cast doubt on their Carabao Cup semi-final game on Thursday night against Arsenal.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have already been struck by the absences of Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho, Curtis Jones and Thiago due to positive Covid tests in recent weeks, with the manager himself also missing the Premier League shock at the weekend last with Chelsea.

Alisson Becker, Roberto Firmino and Joel Matip were also excluded from the game at Stamford Bridge due to suspected positive tests as assistant manager Pep Ljinders took charge of the Reds.

And reports suggest their Monday afternoon training session has been called off with the Reds fearing they won’t be able to play on Thursday.

A new attacking option emerges

Arsenal reminded young striker Nikolaj Moller early on of his loan to German team Viktoria Koln.

The 19-year-old Swedish striker impressed while in Germany, leading Arsenal to activate a recall clause to bring him back earlier than expected.

He was due to spend the entire season on loan, but will now continue his development in north London – and may even offer Mikel Arteta another option up front.

It comes as Arteta faces a growing crisis with his front line as former club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been exiled, while Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah could both go for nothing in a few months with their contracts which expire this summer.

Four stars ‘wanted’ for Premier League switch

Newly wealthy Newcastle United could land four Arsenal stars this month as they look to come out of their current relegation fight.

The Magpies became the richest club in world football after their buyout by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund in October, but have struggled in the Premier League so far this season.

Following Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s exile from the first team, Eddie Howe’s side approached Arsenal over an offer for the forward – and they could move for three other Gunners stars as well.
