Just 8 minutes ago, a 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck near El Centro, Imperial County, California, United States. The tremor was recorded on the evening of Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at 8:52 p.m. local time, at a shallow depth of 8.7 miles below the surface.
The event was classified by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) which also listed the earthquake at a magnitude of 3.7.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused significant damage, but was likely felt by many as a slight vibration in the epicenter area.
Weak tremors may have been felt in Holtville (population 6,400) 4 miles from epicenter, Heber (4,300) 7 miles, El Centro (44,000) 8 miles, Calexico (40,100 inhabitants) 8 miles, Imperial (17,100 inhabitants) 15 km and Mexicali (689,800 inhabitants) 18 km.
