Lost Money Due to MoneyGram Fraud? You might be able to get it back – NBC 7 San Diego
Criminals use many different ways to try to steal your money. Bank transfers are a common way they ask you to send them money that is almost impossible to get back. Now, a new MoneyGram settlement with the FTC is giving people a chance to try and get some of their money back.
“It allowed people to get your money fast and to remain anonymous,” said Todd Kossow, regional director of the FTC.
In 2009, MoneyGram struck a deal with the FTC, agreeing to make it harder for criminals to use its services.
“It required them to have a comprehensive anti-fraud program,” Kossow said.
The company was supposed to control its agents more, train them on the signs of a scam, and try to catch the agents involved in the scam. In 2018, the FTC and other federal agencies believed MoneyGram had failed to follow the 2009 order. Kossow says known fraudsters were still allowed to recover money.
There is now a new $ 125 million settlement with the FTC and MoneyGram. The commission claimed that MoneyGram had not done what it had agreed to do to fight fraud. If you’ve been a victim of fraud and sent money through MoneyGram, here’s how you can file a claim to get your money back.
If you haven’t received a pre-filled form in the mail, but still lost money between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2017, visit MoneyGramRemission.com.
To be eligible, you must have made the transfer from the United States and used your own name on the transfer.
In addition, you will need to provide your Social Security number to be confirmed with the Department of Justice and the Treasury Compensation Program to verify that you do not owe money to the federal government. If you do, your claim could be reduced by the amount you owe.
The process is also slow as they confirm that the people applying are eligible. The FTC says it will take at least a year to review and verify these claims.
“We want to make sure that the people collecting the money actually made these transfers,” Kossow said.
