The inauguration and the cutting of the ribbon took place with a symbolic transfer of the famous 17th century microscope by van Leeuwenhoek, by Amito Haarhuis. Known worldwide for his pioneering work and discoveries in microscopy, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek developed this single lens microscope, which has been shown to be capable of more powerful magnification than other lenses.
Takaharu Sasaoka, Director and Executive Vice President, Head of Healthcare Business, Nikon Europe BV, appreciates the symbolism of the microscope transfer: “It is very fitting that Nikon, with over 100 years of expertise in the optical technology, opens its first European Nikon BioImaging. Lab (NBIL-Leiden) here in the Netherlands, the home of Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, the “father of microbiology”, whose systematic and extensive research laid the foundation for medical and scientific research. Our mission is also to advance healthcare and provide a better quality of life.
“We are very happy to be located here in the Leiden Bio Science Park, the largest life science cluster in the Netherlands, and I would like to thank all the organizations that have helped Nikon Europe BV locate and develop this partnership. Following the success of our Nikon BioImaging labs in the US and Japan, NBIL-Leiden will provide microscope imaging and analysis services to the wider European biotechnology, pharma and research communities. We are more than a central facility – our full service capabilities include not only access to Nikon’s innovative microscopy instrumentation and software, but also the services of expert biologists and microscopists, who are available to provide a quality cell culture, sample preparation, data acquisition, and data analysis services.
Daniel Ciepielewski, Managing Director of the Healthcare Division of Nikon Europe BV, explains: “NBIL-Leiden provides a full service imaging, data analysis and cell culture using microscope systems and Nikon software solutions. state-of-the-art, including the new AX R confocal laser scanning scanner, LIPSI incubated high-content imaging platform, NIS.ai deep learning software, Ti2-E inverted research microscope and microscope compact live cell imaging device BioStudio-T. Unlike other imaging facilities, the lab offers full-service cell culture capabilities – our experienced staff are equipped to handle cell thawing, maintenance, expansion, differentiation, and other essential operations.
“The level of service and the laboratory’s involvement are determined individually for each client according to needs. Some only need access to the equipment and are able to acquire / analyze data on their own, while others may require a full imaging and analysis service. Additional applications include high content imaging and analysis, 3D imaging, fluorescence imaging, high resolution imaging, color imaging, unlabeled imaging, cell screening and imaging broadband, among others. NBIL-Leiden is now open and offers expert imaging support – on demand. “
Nikon Europe BV thanks InnovationQuarter, the regional economic development agency for the province of Zuid-Holland, who helped us find the right location and coordinate communication to develop the partnership with the Leiden Bio Science Park.
Nikon Europe BV also thanks the following contributing companies that have partnered with NBIL-Leiden: Clean Air Baker, PHC, Crest Optics, Photometrics, CoolLed and Precipoint.
