Some scams come and go, but the lottery scam always does the trick.
Fraudsters still use it to try to make more victims.
A viewer sent News 8 On Your Side a letter her mother received. He says she won the Spanish Mega Millions contest and asks her to contact a claims agent.
The letter asks the recipient to travel to Spain to sign documents. If this is not possible, the “winner” must pay home delivery costs and insurance costs, or there may be a bank transfer directly to the person’s account.
There are red flags here:
- You cannot win a lottery in which you did not participate.
- You never have to pay upfront to get a prize.
- Even though there is a Mega Millions logo, Mega Millions released a statement about scammers misusing its name. The lottery said: “No Mega Millions representative would call, text or email anyone to win a prize.”
